Chairman of Russian State Duma expresses support for proposal to reconsider attitude toward Stalin

Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin called the proposal by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation to reconsider the decision of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which condemned USSR leader Joseph Stalin, the right decision. He made this statement on July 23 during the final meeting of the eighth session of the VIII convocation. A video of his speech was published on the social network VKontakte.

Volodin touched upon the topic of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and reminded that the Volgograd airport was renamed Stalingrad Airport. As the speaker noted, after the end of World War II, all states recognized that the Soviet people had made the decisive contribution to saving the world. Therefore, streets and metro stations in Europe were named after Stalin. However, in recent times, Europe has begun to forget history, distort it, and diminish the contributions of those who defeated fascism.

“A few days ago in France, they renamed a boulevard that bore the name Stalingrad. We should not tolerate this. And in this context, the decision by our colleagues from the Communist Party to reconsider the 20th Congress decision was very appropriate. Because in many ways, that congress decision shaped the attitude not only toward the leader of the state – who did practically everything to create it and, as Supreme Commander-in-Chief, did everything to win the Great Patriotic War. That decision shaped the attitude toward us,” Volodin explained.

He emphasized that when the Soviet Union was strong, the world respected it. Speaking about Stalin’s significance, Volodin reminded that through the sacrifices and hardships following the 1917 Revolution and the Civil War, the Russian state was recreated in a new form – the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – and Stalin played a huge role in this.

“We need to acknowledge that and call things by their proper names. As Supreme Commander-in-Chief, he did everything to secure victory in the Great Patriotic War – and that’s a fact. The great deeds becomes clearer over time – I think you’ll agree with that,” Volodin stated.
