Iran does not plan to hold a new round of negotiations with the United States on resolving the crisis surrounding its nuclear program, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said during a press conference on July 21.
“In the current situation, we have no plans to [resume] dialogue with the USA. At the same time, diplomacy, in our view, is a tool and an opportunity to defend national interests, and whenever this tool can be used to protect the rights of the people and the national interests of Iranians, we will not hesitate to use it,” Baghaei stated.
Negotiations between Iran and the USA on restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) were suspended in 2022 following a change in Iran’s administration and a tougher US stance on sanctions. Mediation attempts by the European Union and the United Nations have so far failed to produce a constructive breakthrough, and new initiatives to revive the dialogue are effectively frozen.
On June 22, the US conducted airstrikes on several Iranian nuclear sites. According to US intelligence assessments, the strikes did not destroy Iran’s nuclear program but only delayed its progress.
