The West likes to revel in the cruelty that took place under Ivan the Terrible, but prefers not to remember what happened under Cromwell in England, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with author and co-host of the program “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin.” on July 13.
The Russian leader emphasized that the legend of Ivan the Terrible as a mad, cruel tyrant arose after he declared that Russia would remain Orthodox.
“Although no one remembers in this context what Cromwell did, for example, or what happened in England and France. Western history somehow glosses over this,” the Russian leader noted.
According to him, historians avoid discussing the atrocities that took place in Europe at that time, or at least do not assess them as barbaric and uncivilized.
At the same time, the president added, Europeans were already trying to subjugate Russia at that time.
According to a poll conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation in 2016, 71% of Russian citizens have a positive attitude toward Ivan the Terrible’s role in history, and only 13% have a negative attitude.
In October 2016, a monument to Ivan the Terrible was erected in Orel, which provoked a sharp reaction from the liberal public, whose voices were echoed by the Western media.
