More than 2 million Hungarian citizens do not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, according to survey data announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on June 26 ahead of the EU summit.
The survey was conducted over a two-month period and concluded on June 20. Citizens were asked about their stance on Ukraine joining the EU.
“There were 2,278,000 valid ballots, with a few invalid ones. Out of the valid ballots, 2,168,431 Hungarian citizens — or 95% of the votes — do not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union,” Orbán stated.
He clarified that only 5% of respondents supported Ukraine’s EU membership. Orbán noted that these results would significantly help him defend Hungary’s position at the EU summit.
On June 24, Orbán posted on X (formerly Twitter) that if Ukraine were to join NATO, it would lead to an immediate war with Russia and risk triggering World War III. He emphasized that “this is why Ukraine must not join either NATO or the European Union.” The Hungarian Prime Minister also remarked that Brussels aims to include Ukraine in the EU by 2030, but that cannot happen without Hungary’s consent.
