Russian Defense Minister urges SCO countries to strengthen joint fight against terrorism

The countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) must intensify their joint efforts to combat terrorism and extremism originating from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov stated on June 26 at a meeting of defense ministers of the SCO member states.

“It also seems logical to gradually integrate the organization’s potential with the capabilities of other international regional structures in the field of security — primarily with the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States,” he added.

Belousov emphasized that in the current global situation, it is essential to strengthen cooperation within the organization. The minister called for maintaining the course toward closer ties among SCO members to bolster stability and prevent unfriendly nations from undermining the connections established within the alliance, taking into account the interests of all participants.

As practical steps, the Russian minister proposed strengthening cooperation among defense departments. He urged continued consultations on security and prioritized joint operational and combat training activities.

“We should expand the geography and scope of joint exercises and improve the training of the units involved,” Belousov said.

He noted that Russia is prepared to share its experience in combat operations. Implementing the proposed plans will support the development of the SCO and enhance its global standing, Belousov stressed.
