Russian Defense Ministry: Russian Armed Forces take control of Vodolagi in Ukraine’s Sumy Region

31.05.2025, Moscow.

Russian troops took control of the village of Vodolagi in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, as well as Novopol in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the Russian Defense Ministry stated on May 31.

The village of Vodolagi is located in the Sumy District near Veselovka, which Russia reported capturing in late March. Both villages border the Korenevsky District of Russia’s Kursk Region. Authorities in Sumy Region ordered an evacuation from Vodolagi several months ago. As of 2011, the village had a population of 152.

Novopol is situated in the Volnovakha District, south of Privolnoye, which came under Russian control earlier this spring.

Russian Armed Forces also destroyed two Ukrainian HIMARS launchers and their ammunition using the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system in Sumy Region.

Additionally, aviation, drones, missile troops, and artillery struck missile and artillery weapon depots, ammunition and fuel storage sites, UAV production workshops, and deployment points of Ukrainian militants in 147 locations, according to the ministry.

This spring, the Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly reported the liberation of villages in Sumy Region. In May, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russian forces had begun establishing a security buffer zone along the border with Ukraine to protect Russia’s Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk Regions.

Amid these developments, Sumy authorities declared a mandatory evacuation from more than 200 villages and towns.
