Kurginyan details factors that allow Russia to maintain relations with China

There are several factors that allow Russia to maintain relations with China, political scientist, philosopher, and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on May 16 on the Conversation with a Sage on the Zvezda radio channel.

Discussing the relationship between modern Russia and China, the philosopher described it as complex. He emphasized that it is not worth hoping that “the idea of Russian freedom will inspire Chinese hearts.” In addition, the Chinese will never forget that, “in their terminology, Russia lost face in 1991,” Sergey Kurginyan emphasized.

The political scientist noted that the Chinese will only consider their own interests in their relations with Russia. “But there are several factors that allow us to stay afloat in Russian-Chinese relations right now,” he explained.

“The first of these factors is the northern border. China desperately needs a stable northern border with Russia. Russia shares a long border with China, including Mongolia and, in general, Central Asia. China understands that if chaos breaks out on this border, it will suffer greatly,” emphasized Sergey Kurginyan.

The political scientist explained that, on the one hand, China is not interested in strengthening Russia; however, it also does not need chaos on its northern borders.

The second important factor in good relations between the two countries, according to Sergey Kurginyan, is raw materials. Of course, there are other interests related to Russia, the analyst explained.

“When China realized that the United States would exert pressure on it because it was rising to the leading world power, and that it would be contained — and it can only be contained in the same way as Germany [in the beginning of the 20th century] — when it realized this, it seriously turned toward Russia. Not completely, not 100%, but emerged something that what we saw in the form of Xi Jinping’s visit and everything else,” the political scientist emphasized.

Sergey Kurginyan emphasized that this position is very important for Russia, “Russia has won in Russian-Chinese relations, not in the sense that we are brothers forever and a united military bloc, but at least in the sense that there is no ‘Chimerica,’ there is no union [of the Chinese] with the Americans.”

At the same time, of course, “everyone plays for themselves. Everyone understands that the game can unfold in different ways. But mutual interests are significant enough to prevent an alliance between the Americans and China, an alliance between NATO and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army,” concluded Sergey Kurginyan.
