Kurginyan explains what could have saved the Soviet Union

30.05.2025, Moscow.

The collapse of the USSR and the communist project could have been avoided if the post-Stalinist elite had adopted the Liberation Theology proposed by the leader of the Cuban revolution Fidel Castro, philosopher, political scientist, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said in his video address dedicated to Victory Day on May 9.

Kurginyan recalled that the Soviet project was truly great and ambitious, but it failed. And the greatness of this project cannot but be overshadowed by the bitterness of its following collapse. The Soviet project must be considered in all its complexity. Attempts to “subtract” the fundamental components of the Soviet project or to admire its selected achievements while forgetting about the subsequent collapse of the USSR, which brought conflicts in “hot spots” on Russian and post-Soviet territory, NATO expansion to the East, and the revival of Nazism, look strange.

“It is absurd trying to subtract Stalin, the Communist Party, all of Soviet life, Soviet industrialization, which made everything possible, Soviet spirituality, without which the victory [in the Great Patriotic War] could not have been achieved,” the philosopher said.

“And if you consider all this together, then you must ask yourself: Where is it now? And who defeated it? After all, we see these Banderites [Ukrainian neo-Nazis – translator’s note]. Aren’t they the heirs of Nazism? They started what caused the special military operation in Ukraine. And what is all this about? What does this mean in the great historical sense?” he added.

Even after the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the USSR, which dealt a huge blow to the communist project by “exposing” Stalin’s so-called “personality cult”, the USSR could have not only avoided the collapse, but could have now become the “number one” country, if the post-Stalin elite, which still has been viable, had adopted Latin American Liberation Theology, which spoke about the great Christian meaning of communism.

“Christian preachers held the works of Marx and the cross in their hands, the Red Banner and the cross were united, communism was mentioned as a teaching with a great Christian meaning. If the representatives of the Soviets elite – although already becoming a petty bourgeois, just look at Khrushchev’s face, but still viable at the time and capable of action – had just adopted what Fidel was doing, or developed it, and this was not difficult to do – we would now be living in the country number one,” Kurginyan said.
