Russia proposes holding a second round of Russian-Ukrainian talks on June 2 in Istanbul, the Russian Foreign Ministry press service reported on May 28.
The Russian Foreign Ministry published a statement by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The statement said that the conditions for the resumption of direct Russian-Ukrainian talks had been created with the support of the US, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
During the first round of talks on May 16 in Istanbul, an agreement was reached on the exchange of prisoners in a “1,000 for 1,000” format. At the same time, the parties agreed to prepare documents setting out their positions in order to achieve a sustainable settlement. Moscow promptly drafted a memorandum setting out Russia’s position “on all aspects of reliably overcoming the root causes of the crisis.”
“Our delegation, led by V. R. Medinsky, is ready to present this memorandum to the Ukrainian delegation and provide the necessary explanations during the second round of resumed direct talks in Istanbul next Monday, June 2,” Lavrov said.
The minister expressed his gratitude to the Turkish side for providing a hospitable venue. As Lavrov emphasized, Moscow expects that all those sincerely interested in the success of the peace process will support the holding of a new round of Istanbul talks.
