Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied long-range weapons against Russia will extend the conflict across continental Europe, Andrey Klimov, head of the Federation Council Commission for the Protection of Russia’s Sovereignty, wrote on May 27 on his Telegram channel.
According to Klimov, following German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s remarks about lifting restrictions on strikes against Russia, residents in Poland and Lithuania’s border areas have begun evacuating. Klimov emphasized that these people, unlike NATO leaders, understand the consequences of such actions.
“At the same time, it’s not guaranteed that Moscow would limit itself to the current means of defense,” he noted.
The situation in the Suwałki Corridor, which connects Lithuania and Poland, sharply escalated after Merz stated that the UK, France, Germany, and the US had removed range limitations on weapons supplied to Ukraine. The Kremlin called this decision a dangerous escalation.
