Argentine friends of Cuba honor the memory of José Martí

25.05.2025, Buenos Aires.

A gathering at the House of Argentine-Cuban Friendship in Buenos Aires evoked memories of the life and work of Apostle of Cuban Independence, José Martí, Prensa Latina wrote on May 25.

The event was held on the 130th anniversary of Martí’s death in battle and the 215th anniversary of the May Revolution, which gave birth to the Argentine nation.

The cultural evening was led by Cuban poet and writer Víctor Casaus and Argentine singer-songwriter José Ceña. Rubén Zaccaro, a leader of the Argentine Movement for Solidarity with Cuba, compared Martí’s ideals of independence, who organized the “necessary war,” with the struggles for independence and the founding of Argentina by José de San Martín, Manuel Belgrano, Mariano Moreno, Juan Martín Güemes and Juana Azurduy.

Zaccaro recalled that the current government in Casa Rosada intends to close the Che La Pastera Museum and urged those present to join the movement to prevent the closure of this important institution in San Martín de los Andes, located in Argentine Patagonia.

Cuban Ambassador Pedro Pablo Prada then described the historical significance of the May Revolution, which inspired other Latin American nations to fight for their liberation from Spanish colonial rule.

Stating that Martí must be remembered as if he lived, he emphasized his political, revolutionary, and ethical values, his deep altruism and patriotism, and noted that the Cuban people inherit the legacy of their historic leaders, from the Apostle to Fidel Castro.

Prada mentioned that with foresight, Martí warned that Cuba was engaged in a battle of ideas — one that must be won through thought. Similarly, Fidel Castro launched the Battle of Ideas in the 1990s.

The ambassador warned that this ideological war against the island is intensifying, exploiting the consequences of Washington’s harsh economic blockade policy in its ongoing attempts to make the Cuban revolution capitulate.

Erenia García, president of the Union of Cuban Residents in Argentina, affirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the island, demanding an end to the vile blockade and the removal of Cuba from the false list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism.

Casaus and Ceña, who hosted the evening, exchanged poems and songs with Latin American and revolutionary themes, which were well-received and sung along by those in attendance.
