The disappearance of the collective West as it used to be known opens new opportunities for Serbia, the country’s President Aleksandar Vucic said, he told reporters at the European Political Community summit on May 16.
“Today it is clear that as we used to represent the collective West, there is no such thing anymore. This gives us additional opportunities for progress in Europe and, at the same time, an opportunity to work with partners even faster and stronger,” Vucic said.
Vucic said he held three-hour talks with European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In doing so, Tusk awakened his hope for Serbia’s accession to the EU.
In April 2025, the British newspaper Financial Times reported that EU officials warned Vucic that his presence at a parade in which troops involved in the conflict with Ukraine would march would violate the country’s EU membership criteria.
Estonian Foreign Minister Jonatan Vseviov also threatened that Serbia might not be admitted to the EU if Vucic attends the parade in Moscow. Head of Eurodiplomacy Kaja Kallas also said that Brussels is against EU countries participating in Victory Day celebrations in Moscow. This also applies to the EU candidate countries.
