The West must stop supplying weapons to Kiev if it wants to prolong a ceasefire in the long term, stated Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov on May 10, according to ABC News.
In an exclusive interview, Peskov emphasized that before announcing a pause in hostilities, Russia must see certain dynamics on the battlefield and a halt to the supply of weapons to Ukraine from the West.
He noted that otherwise, it would benefit Ukraine. Ukraine will continue total mobilization, sending new troops to the front lines. Ukraine will use this period to train new servicemen and give rest to those already serving, Peskov explained, adding that Moscow does not intend to give Kiev such an advantage.
The press secretary rejected accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin is stalling and unwilling to reach a peaceful resolution.
On the contrary, it is the Russian leader who is doing everything possible to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means. It is precisely the lack of peaceful solutions that forces him to continue the military operation, Peskov stressed. At the same time, he noted Kiev’s unwillingness to engage in peace negotiations.
According to the press secretary, the Kremlin hopes that U.S. President Donald Trump will help Moscow to add a bit more flexibility and political will to Kiev’s position.
The Russian leader earlier proposed a ceasefire on May 8, 9, and 10 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. In response, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky called for a 30-day ceasefire and an immediate, unconditional cessation of hostilities. Trump later supported this proposal.
Kiev is not adhering to the ceasefire during the holiday period. For example, on May 9, a Ukrainian UAV attacked the administration building in Belgorod. Several people participating in a flower-laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame were injured, including the deputy governor.
