A solemn ceremony to start the construction of a road bridge across the Tumannaya River on the border between Russia and the DPRK was held by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin via video link on April 30, according to the press service of the Russian government.

DPRK Cabinet Chairman Park Tae-sung also took part in the ceremony.

I am glad to welcome you at a significant event – the start ceremony of the construction of a highway bridge over the Tumannaya River at the junction of the borders of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Mishustin said, addressing his North Korean counterpart and other participants in the ceremony.

He noted that the government sees the construction of a bridge crossing, which will make it possible to organize year-round automobile traffic between the countries, as a key priority for strengthening friendly, good-neighborly relations. Currently, Russia and DPRK are connected only by railroad communication, but the existing Friendship railroad bridge over the Tumannaya River is no longer sufficient.

Mishustin emphasized that the road connection via the new bridge will allow to significantly increase the volume of goods transportation and reduce transportation costs, ensure reliable and stable supplies of products and expand trade and economic cooperation between Russia and the DPRK.

The bridge is expected to be completed in a year and a half, by the summer of 2026. The total length of the bridge crossing, including access roads, will be 4.7 kilometers, the length of the bridge itself will be one kilometer. The width of the bridge will be seven meters, two lanes will be organized on it.
