A protest against militarization at the cost of cutting social spending, including pensions, which gathered thousands of demonstrators, was held in Brussels on April 27, RIA Novosti wrote.
According to the outlet, supporters of left-wing parties participated in the demonstration, opposing the increase in military-industrial complex spending under the pretext of protection from external threats.
“We demand an end to pension cuts and the militarization of our economy,” stated Raoul Hedebouw, leader of the Workers’ Party of Belgium.
He pointed out that Belgian authorities complain every year about a lack of funds for the social sector, yet in just a few weeks managed to find an additional €4 billion for military expenses that had not been previously planned — despite a budget deficit of €25 billion.
The party leader emphasized that the decision is not yet finalized, which is why protests are necessary to influence the government’s choice. Parties that entered Parliament before the elections did not announce that they would eliminate night shift bonuses, cut pensions, or increase military spending, Hedebouw added.
