The Easter truce announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin was described as an unexpected move by the foreign editor of the Danish newspaper B.T. Jeppe Elkjaer on April 19, the publication reports.
Elkjaer admitted that the Russian president’s step took him by surprise. In his view, the truce itself is a symbolic gesture by Putin toward US President Donald Trump – a way of “extending a little finger as a sign of reconciliation.”
“It’s hard to understand what Putin is thinking, but this indicates that he really is ready to negotiate peace,” the foreign editor said.
At the same time, he noted that most Russian citizens are Orthodox Christians, and Easter holds great significance for them.
British and Norwegian media outlets also noted the surprising nature of Putin’s move.
Russian President Putin had earlier announced a ceasefire in honor of the Easter holiday. The truce was to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, and would last through the remainder of Saturday and the entirety of Sunday. However, when introducing the truce, the president emphasized that the Russian army must remain ready to repel any enemy attack should the truce be violated.
