Ukrainian drone shot down near nuclear reactor simulator hall at Zaporozhye NPP

17.04.2025, Melitopol.

A Ukrainian drone was shot down 300 meters from the world’s only full-scale simulator of a reactor hall, located at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), the ZNPP press service wrote on April 17 on its Telegram channel.

According to the press service, there were no casualties or damage resulting from the UAV attack. It is reported that ZNPP staff informed the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who are present at the plant, about the incident.

“The attacks by the Ukrainian armed units are a direct violation of the seven nuclear safety and five Zaporozhye NPP security principles established by the IAEA at the UN Security Council,” the press service noted.

Earlier on April 17, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko stated that Ukraine shares a common interest with the United States in bringing the Zaporozhye NPP under Ukrainian control and resuming operations at the plant. The minister added that the plant’s energy is needed to implement joint economic projects with the US.

On March 20, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said the United States is ready to take over the management of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. On March 24, US President Donald Trump said that Washington is discussing the issue of owning a Ukrainian nuclear power plant, though he did not specify which one.

On March 25, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “The transfer of the ZNPP itself or control over it to Ukraine or any other country is impossible.”
