Iran ruled out the possibility of lowering its uranium enrichment level in exchange for sanctions relief, stated Esmail Kowsari, a member of Iran’s Parliamentary Commission on National Security, according to RIA Novosti on April 12.
“Since the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2018, such discussions have lost their meaning,” emphasized Kowsari. Negotiations between Iran and the US are taking place in Muscat with Omani mediation.
US President Donald Trump had previously sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing a new deal or preparing for a military response. However, Iran rejected direct talks, agreeing only to dialogue through third-party countries.
According to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Tehran does not intend to make concessions regarding uranium enrichment. In response to the US exit from the JCPOA in 2018, Iran has gradually withdrawn from its commitments, including limits on uranium enrichment levels and nuclear research.
The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and six world powers (the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France). The agreement provided for the lifting of sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. However, after the US pulled out of the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions against Tehran, Iran began scaling back its obligations.
