Not all Western countries supported Estonia in its intention to sink suspicious civilian ships, said Russian Presidential Aide and Chairman of the Russian Maritime Board Nikolay Patrushev on April 11, as reported by Izvestia.
According to him, it is unclear who exactly is backing Tallinn and thereby emboldening the Estonian authorities.
“The Estonians made the statement, but it’s not even known whether they were the initiators,” Patrushev explained.
“Who is supporting them needs to be understood… I think most likely it’s European countries. I can assume that it’s the United Kingdom,” he added.
On April 9, the Estonian parliament passed legislation granting its army and navy the right to sink civilian ships suspected by Estonian Armed Forces of intending to damage underwater cables or other subsea infrastructure.
