French police returned the personal belongings of a Russian Foreign Ministry official detained earlier at Charles de Gaulle airport, the press service of the Russian Embassy in France reported on April 9.

According to the Russian diplomatic mission, after the detention of the Russian Foreign Ministry representative at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, the embassy actively cooperated with the French authorities and provided the necessary consular assistance. As a result of continuous work within 24 hours, it was possible to secure the diplomat’s release and return the seized items to her.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier that the incident took place on April 6, when an employee of the Russian Foreign Ministry, who was part of the official Russian delegation, was detained without explanation. Her cell phone and laptop were confiscated, and the Russian consul, who arrived to assist her, waited for seven hours to be allowed to see her. In connection with the incident, the Russian side sent a note of protest to the French Foreign Ministry and also protested to the French Embassy in Moscow.

As a result of diplomatic measures, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry was allowed to enter the territory of the country, but she was forced to spend a day in the border zone of the airport.

According to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, “these are completely unacceptable actions that contradict all of France’s obligations under the Vienna Convention”. He added that such incidents aggravate the already tense relations between the two countries.
