The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is working on a document addressing the escalating situation in Syria, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya told journalists on March 10.
According to him, all UNSC members expressed a unanimous opinion during consultations that the ongoing events in the country are unacceptable. Russia and the United States had earlier requested closed-door UNSC consultations due to the increasing violence in Syria. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Moscow is concerned about the escalation of the conflict.
According to the Kurdish TV channel Rudaw, as of March 8, at least 532 civilians have been killed in clashes that began on March 6 on the Mediterranean coast. Most of the victims belong to the Alawite community. Among the deceased are family members of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Total losses during this period amount to 745 people, including 93 fighters of the new Syrian authorities and 120 supporters of the armed resistance.
The most intense battles have taken place in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, and Homs. The city of Jableh, a center of the Alawite community, has witnessed the most severe clashes.
