Russian Foreign Ministry explains why the USA wants a ceasefire in Ukraine

04.02.2025, Moscow.

The United States seeks a ceasefire in Ukraine to reduce its own financial burden and shift the responsibility for supporting Kiev onto its European partners, said Aleksey Polishchuk, head of the Second Commonwealth of Independent States Countries Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with TASS on February 4.

“The cessation of hostilities is necessary for the US to cut costs on maintaining the Kiev regime, which has become a loss-making asset for them, and to transfer the burden of its survival onto European partners,” Polishchuk stated.

He emphasized that “it should not be forgotten that Washington is the architect of the Ukrainian crisis,” so a potential freeze of the conflict on US terms should be seen as an attempt to ensure its global hegemony amid a change in power.

“US doctrinal documents have not changed; Russia is still considered one of the main enemies,” the diplomat reminded, emphasizing that there should be no illusions about a bipartisan consensus in Washington on the need to inflict a final strategic defeat on Russia.

Earlier, Polishchuk stated that a serious discussion on resolving the conflict in Ukraine is possible based on the 2022 Istanbul Agreements, which outlined Ukraine’s neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status, its demilitarization and denazification, the non-deployment of foreign troops and bases on its territory, taking into account current territorial realities, and the eradication of the entire set of root causes of the Ukrainian crisis.

Additionally, before negotiations begin, legal aspects regarding the legitimacy of Vladimir Zelensky and his decree banning negotiations with Russia will need to be resolved, he pointed out.
