The deployment of Western short-range missile bases in Ukraine could serve as a security guarantee for Kiev in the event of a peace agreement with Russia, said Mikhail Podolyak, advisor to the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, on January 13 in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa.
He stated that Kiev cannot rely on “just signed documents that Moscow will not adhere to.” Ukraine, he emphasized, needs more effective mechanisms.
As an example, Podolyak suggested the possibility of hosting short-range missile bases in the country, which could target and damage Russian military infrastructure.
Podolyak also dismissed the idea proposed by the future US special envoy to Ukraine that Ukraine should abandon its claims to the Donbass territory.
He argued that understanding the broader context of the conflict is essential for its resolution.
