The end of an epoch: Russian gas transit through Ukraine stopped

01.01.2025, Moscow.

The transit of Russian gas through Ukraine stops on January 1, 2025. This was announced by the press service of the Gazprom company on January 1.

The history of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, which began in 1992, has come to an end. Since January 1, 2025, supplies via this route have ceased. For 30 years, the parties have gone through many crises and disputes, but the contract was invariably extended. Now Ukraine has refused to extend the agreement, which will lead to a redistribution of gas flows in Europe and probably to higher gas prices, creating problems for a number of European countries, including Austria, Moldova, Italy, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, which are now forced to find alternative sources of supply.

Slovakia predicts significant financial losses for the EU. Moldova will face problems in electricity supply, as gas transit through Ukraine has been supporting the operation of the Transnistria TPP.

Russia, thanks to the diversification of export routes, was prepared for such a scenario.
