Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officers prevented a series of assassination attempts on high-ranking officers taking part in Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and their family members by detaining agents of the Ukrainian Security Services (SBU). FSB press service informed on December 26.
“As a result of the investigation, four Russian citizens involved in the preparation of the specified attempts were detained,” the statement reads.
The FSB established that in November, a Russian citizen permanently residing in Ukraine and recruited by the SBU was sent to Moscow for the execution of the terrorist attack. Officially, he was deported and returned to Russia through Moldova and Georgia. His recruited wife, who lives in Poltava Region, arrived with him to coordinate actions.
In Moscow, an agent was given an explosive device disguised as a powerbank with magnets attached and a video surveillance system, which were hidden in a cache. He was instructed to secure the bomb under the official car of a high-ranking officer of the Russian Defense Ministry. The explosion was planned to be activated from the territory of Ukraine.
The SBU also recruited a resident of Moscow. He monitored the places of residence and work of high-ranking servicemen of the Russian Defense Ministry and their family members. The agent sent photos and video materials to Ukraine to plan terrorist attacks.
In addition, two recruited Russian citizens were preparing a terrorist attack against one of the servicemen. They wanted to hand him an explosive device disguised as a folder with documents. The attackers received it through a cache.
“Improvised explosive devices and means of communication used in criminal activity were seized from the detainees. Delivery to our country of components of explosive devices by the intelligence services of the enemy was carried out in household appliances, tools and car parts,” the statement reads.
Criminal cases were initiated against the detainees under articles providing for terrorism, treason and illegal trafficking in explosives. They face up to life imprisonment.
