07.12.2024, Oslo.

The ship Finlandia Seaways, which was carrying arms from Norway to Poland, ran aground off the coast of Norway, the magazine Forsvarets Forum, published by the Norwegian Armed Forces, wrote on December 7.

It is noted that the cargo ship Finlandia Seaways belongs to the Danish shipping company DFDS. There is no information yet on how long the delivery of Norwegian weapons to Poland has been delayed.

“Finlandia Seaways ran aground on Thursday evening in the Karmsunn Strait off the coast of Höugesunn municipality. The vessel was on its way to Poland with an air defense system to protect the airspace at [the airfield – Rossa Primavera News Agency] Rzeszow-Jasenka, located near the border with Ukraine… Now the delivery of equipment is postponed,” the publication said.

In a comment to the Forsvarets Forum report, Rescue Management Center duty officer Thomas Breivoll explained that the helm and propeller of Finlandia Seaways were damaged.

At the same time, the representative of the operative staff of the Norwegian Armed Forces Hanne Olafsen said that to protect the military cargo, the area near the grounded vessel was declared a temporarily closed territory.

Olafsen told the magazine that the Norwegian Armed Forces Command is currently working out a solution that could allow the military cargo to be delivered to the addressee by another means of transportation. As for the timing of the delivery of weapons, she could not answer anything, only adding that as a result of the incident with the ship, none of the crew was injured.

Earlier, representatives of the Ministries of Defense of Norway and Poland reported that Oslo would send to Warsaw four fighter jets F-35, surface-to-air missile systems NASAMS, as well as 100 military personnel to protect the airspace near the airport of Rzeszów, where the largest hub for the supply of Western weapons to Kiev is located. The agencies also reported that Germany plans to re-deploy Patriot missile defense systems on Polish territory.
