Russian President Vladimir Putin disclosed some details about the new Oreshnik” missile system in its non-nuclear configuration on November 28 during the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit in Astana.
The president clarified that this system does not carry nuclear warheads; thus, it is not classified as a weapon of mass destruction. The system’s warheads attack targets at a speed of Mach 10 (approximately 3 kilometers per second).
This system is categorized as a precision weapon capable of hitting even deeply buried and fortified targets. The temperature of the impacting elements can reach 4,000 degrees Celsius.
“According to military and technical experts, if these missiles are used in a massive, grouped application- several ‘Oreshniks’ in a cluster in one strike – their power will be comparable to that of nuclear weapons,” Putin stated.
The president added that Russia already has several of these systems ready for use and that production has been scaled up to serial manufacturing.
The Russian Defense Ministry and the General Staff of the Russian Army are selecting targets within Ukraine.
Tests of the Oreshnik system through strikes on Ukrainian territory will continue if Ukraine does not cease its attacks using long-range missiles of Western manufacture on Russian territory.
