Pro-Russian candidate outpaces current prime minister in presidential elections in Romania

25.11.2024, Bukharest.

In the Romanian presidential elections, pro-Russian supporter Călin Georgescu is leading over the country’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, according to data from the Central Electoral Commission published on November 25 after counting 95% of the votes on the CEC website.

Georgescu has garnered 22.18% of the votes, while Ciolacu has 20.9%. In third place is the leader of the “Save Romania Union” (USR), Elena Lasconi, who advocates for an anti-Russian policy, with 17.94% of the votes.

Since no candidate has achieved more than 50%, a second round of elections will be held. This runoff is scheduled for December 8.

Georgescu supports traditional values and advocates for an alliance with Russia, arguing that NATO does not guarantee security. However, his candidacy is controversial due to his praise for Romanian fighters who fought alongside the fascists during World War II.
