Hurriyet: US sanctions may prevent Turkey from paying Russia for gas

25.11.2024, Ankara.

US sanctions against Russia’s Gazprombank may cause problems in payment for Russian gas supplies to Turkey, the Hurriyet newspaper wrote on November 25.

“Due to the situation with the bank, Turkey, Hungary, Greece, Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Italy, and Austria will be unable to make payments for the natural gas exported from Russia,” the newspaper noted.

The newspaper mentioned that Moscow had already begun searching for alternative payment methods. However, it is expected that the most severe consequences of the sanctions will manifest in January.

Hurriyet also highlighted that the sanctions have rendered operations through UnionPay bank cards impossible, impacting private clients abroad.

The newspaper recalled that last week, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the Turkish parliament, stating that Ankara imports 40% of its gas through Gazprom, but the US remains unconcerned about this situation.

On November 21, the US imposed sanctions on Gazprombank. Under the president’s directive, payments for gas supplied to Europe were conducted through this bank.
