Under current conditions, a trade war between the EU and China is unavoidable, said Jens Eskelund, head of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, in an interview with the South China Morning Post published on October 10.
Eskelund emphasized that in the absence of changes, a trade war looks more and more likely.
He noted that if the direction of the processes does not change, a trade war is unavoidable, as there has been a decline in Chinese imports and an increasing, accelerating growth in Chinese exports for several years now.
Eskelund urged to look at the big picture and take Europe’s concerns about the PRC government’s policies seriously. He suggested that China’s duties on electric cars have overshadowed the broader processes that are taking place in EU-PRC trade.
The head of the Chamber of Commerce noted that the Chinese economy has grown by 40% since 2017, while exports from Europe to China have fallen by 30% over the same period. Eskelund emphasized that such situation is worth further discussion.
Last week the European Commission said that the EU approved the introduction of duties on electric cars from China, which could be up to 36.3%.
