North Korea may have started to build a nuclear-powered submarine (SSN) in the northeastern part of the country, the Yonhap News Agency wrote, citing satellite data from the South Korean military.
“Partial signs that appear to be the start of the submarine’s construction have been detected,” the South Korean Military Intelligence Agency said in a report. It is noted that the submarine under construction is larger in size than any of Pyongyang’s existing submarines.
In January 2021 at the party congress, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said that “the project of a new nuclear-powered submarine has been studied and is at the stage of final verification.”
