The European Union (EU) will remain defenseless if the United States refuses to be its umbrella, former Italian Prime Minister and former head of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi said during the presentation of a report on the European Commission’s (EC) YouTube channel on September 9.
He said EU countries are not ready to raise defense spending to two percent of GDP. And this is while the US is shifting its priorities from Europe to the Pacific and AUKUS alliances.
“The growing demand for defense capabilities is facing a shrinking supply. This is a gap that Europe must fill on its own,” Draghi said. Meanwhile, the arsenals of EU states have been emptied due to military aid to Ukraine.
Earlier, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen promised to turn the EU into a defense bloc, as well as to create a European defense fund.
