The West has long sought to sever the ties of the South Caucasus with Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on August 8 to RIA Novosti.
She commented on the statement of US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien about plans to help Armenia distance itself from Russia in economic matters, as allegedly desired by a significant portion of the republic’s population.
“The West is promoting a destructive agenda in the South Caucasus, the main goal of which remains the same – to fragment the region by severing historical ties between Russia and its traditional allies and neighbors,” Zakharova said.
The diplomat emphasized that O’Brien’s words are not surprising. He confirmed what Moscow regularly warns its partners about, including in Yerevan. Zakharova also called the US claims that Armenia wants to turn away from Russia baseless.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman representative is confident that the relations between the two countries, which have developed over centuries, will withstand the challenges posed by the West. She stressed that Russia has repeatedly provided fraternal assistance to the Armenian people.
