Germany’s federal states are using various tricks to force Ukrainian men to return home, the German publication MSN wrote on August 7.
For several months now, politicians have been discussing how to deal with Ukrainian refugees subject to military service at home.
Last week, the government of Hesse stated in response to a question from the AfD party that local immigration authorities generally do not issue German travel documents to Ukrainian men of conscription age. They need to travel to Ukraine to obtain passports.
The report notes that men will most likely be immediately drafted into military service upon returning home.
In response to FOCUS online, Siegfried Lorek (CDU), State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice of Baden-Württemberg, confirmed, “According to current legislation, the immigration authorities of Baden-Württemberg no longer issue documents to Ukrainian men subject to military service.” The CDU politician also believes it is reasonable for these individuals to undergo military service.
Lorek believes the authorities are not acting unfairly. Moreover, he stated that under Ukrainian law, Ukrainian men of conscription ages are liable to prosecution for desertion.
The report also notes that the government of Bavaria shares this position.
