India expresses concern that Bangladesh may become base for Northeast Indian insurgent groups

Insurgents from northeastern India may resume fighting from Bangladeshi territory following the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the country, The Economic Times wrote on August 7 referring to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma said at a press conference that it would be a problem for India if the rebels in northeastern Bangladesh created bases again.

The minister explained that during Hasina’s rule, militants from northeastern India were expelled from Bangladesh. He expressed confidence that the new government in Dhaka would hold talks with New Delhi, and together they would resolve the issue.

Sarma said that the Indian authorities were really concerned about this and have been thinking about the situattion constantly for the last three to four days, commenting on the situation in the near and distant future.
