Ceremony of laying flowers at Soviet military intelligence officer Sorge’s grave is held in Japan

Russian diplomats and employees of the Russian Trade Mission in Japan laid flowers on the tomb of legendary Soviet spy Richard Sorge on the eve of Victory Day, RIA Novosti wrote on May 8.

The ceremony of laying flowers and wreaths at the tomb of legendary Soviet spy Richard Sorge is held at the Tama Reien cemetery in the suburbs of Tokyo on the eve of Victory Day.

“All participants of those tragic events contributed to the Victory. An especially great contribution was made by Richard Sorge – a unique, legendary, and significant personality. During the most difficult period, he supplied the Soviet leadership with extremely important information,” Nikolay Nozdrev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Japan, said during the event.

He emphasized that Sorge’s group worked in extremely difficult and risky conditions, but with the outbreak of the war they continued to act for the benefit of the Motherland and gave their lives for it.

Richard Sorge was executed on November 7, 1944 in Tokyo prison Sugamo, buried in the cemetery Tama Reien. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1964.
