Imran Khan gives a timeline for the fall of new government and his release

21.03.2024, Islamabad.

Pakistan’s new government is unlikely to stay in power for more than four to five months and then fall, which would be a prologue to his own release from jail, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on March 21 during a press conference at Adiala Jail after a hearing in a budget embezzlement case.

He noted that the second strongest party in the current ruling coalition, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), had refused to form a coalition government with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for a reason.

According to the politician, Pakistan’s relations with Iran and Afghanistan have soured. He expressed fear that this would lead to a new wave of rising terrorism.

Earlier, a district court in Islamabad acquitted Imran Khan and his associate, former Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in two cases of inciting protests dated May 26, 2023. The judge noted that the prosecution had failed to provide any meaningful evidence about the two politicians’ links to the protesters.

However, Imran Khan has already been sentenced in three cases. He is to spend a total of 31 years in jail.

Khan’s party, Movement for Justice, is currently the main opposition force in the country, with significant stakes in the federal and Punjab provincial parliaments, as well as controlling the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
