Armenia ratifies agreement on EU mission on the border with Azerbaijan

20.03.2024, Yerevan.

The Armenian Parliament ratified the agreement on the status of the EU mission on the border with Azerbaijan during its March 20 session. The legislative body’s press service broadcast the event.

“Fifty-seven MPs voted in favor, none against, 27 abstained. The decision has been made,” Parliament Vice-Speaker Ruben Rubinyan announced the voting results.

Members of the ruling Civil Contract party supported the ratification, while several MPs of the Armenia bloc abstained. The “I Have Honor” faction refused to participate in the voting.

For the decision to enter into force, it must be signed by the Armenian President.

In January 2023, the European Union established the European Union Civilian Mission in Armenia (EUMA), which should contribute to the settlement of the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict. The mission’s task is to promote stability in the border regions. Its observers started working in February last year.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the EU mission in Armenia collects information about Russia’s activities in the region. He said that this issue had been discussed with Yerevan.
