L’Indépendant: France may send its troops to Ukraine if Kiev or Odessa is threatened

08.03.2024, Paris.

If Russia advances its troops to Kiev or Odessa, France may send its troops to Ukraine, Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the French Communist Party, said, commenting on French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent statements, the L’Indépendant newspaper wrote on March 8.

According to Roussel, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a meeting with political party leaders that “the front’s advance toward Odessa or Kiev” would be an pretext “that could lead to France’s intervention” in the conflict.

Several representatives of other opposition parties took a similar view of the French leader’s remarks. The chairman of the National Union, MEP Jordan Bardella, also had an opinion about the French authorities’ readiness to do everything to support Ukraine.

“There are no boundaries or red lines,” Bardella stated.

“I arrived concerned and left even more concerned,” concluded Manuel Bompard, coordinator of the political movement La France Insoumise (France Unbowed).

On March 7, Emmanuel Macron met with the leaders of French parties to describe a policy of support for Ukraine. Earlier, the French president strongly supported the idea of sending troops to Ukraine.

The French defense minister said that opposition politicians had misinterpreted Macron’s words about the possible sending of troops to Ukraine.
