Commander-in-Chief of Russian Navy: US warships equipped with Tomahawks threaten Russia’s national security

10.01.2024, Moscow.

US warships are a threat to national security because of the ability of Tomahawk cruise missiles to reach objects on Russian territory, Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolay Yevmenov said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda on January 10.

As the commander-in-chief stated, “The threats to the military security of the Russian Federation of oceanic and maritime directions are influenced by such major factors as…. patrolling at sea on a permanent basis by ships carrying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles with the ability to launch a massive strike against objects on most of Russia’s territory.”

According to the Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief, Tomahawk cruise missiles have a range of up to 5,500 kilometers. This type of weapon is available among powerful groups of foreign navies in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea.

In addition, Nikolay Yevmenov noted that the USA has plans “to infringe on Russia’s interests in the Arctic by revising the status of the Northern Sea Route and the possible passage of warships, as well as the active deployment of ship groups of the naval component of the missile defense system and nuclear submarines of the US and UK Navy in the Arctic basin.”

Yevmenov concluded that threats to national security require a modern navy “capable of countering these threats and, together with other branches and branches of the armed forces, of providing strategic nuclear and non-nuclear deterrence against aggression and protecting the national interests of the Russian Federation in the world’s oceans.”

According to the Russian Navy, in December 2023, four fleets and one Caspian Flotilla returned to direct subordination to the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy.
