Somali Disaster Management Agency sends aid from Russia to affected regions

Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) sent aid from the Russian federal government for distribution to El Niño-affected regions of Somalia, Somalia’s Mustaqbal Media wrote on December 15.

Two boats loaded with humanitarian aid from the Somali capital of Mogadishu were recently sent to the ports of Kismayo and Garakad for distribution to the needy in the Puntland and Jubbaland regions.

SoDMA officials said the shipment is part of the efforts to help those affected by floods due to heavy fall rains and river overflows.

SoDMA Chairman Mohamud Maallim Abdulle said part of the donated Russian wheat amounting to 2,387 tons was delivered to the Kismayo port of the Jubbaland Regional Government and sent to help 54,000 families.

In turn, the regional government of Puntland announced that 850 tons of wheat from Russia arrived at the port of Garagad and were distributed to help 17,000 families affected by El Niño.

Rossa Primavera News Agency informed earlier that Somalia faced a humanitarian crisis caused by heavy rains and El Niño flooding. According to SoDMA, 120 people died as a result of flooding in Somalia, besides, the disaster destroyed 4 thousand livestock and destroyed 140 thousand houses.
