The Russian people are really talented at state building, but over the past century they have destroyed their state twice because they stopped loving it, said philosopher, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on October 21 on the Right to Know program on the TVC channel.
Participants in the program discussed the issue of whether the concept of “nation-state” is applicable to Russia.
According to Kurginyan, Russians always build a symphonic, manifold world.
“This is this moderate, civilized, careful, neat Russification. Putin will never speak in such a way that would undermine the multinational consensus. He is always very careful about it,” Kurginyan noted.
However, while showing a great talent for building an empire that would benefit all its parts, the Russians twice over the past century destroyed the state they had built.
“I have always said that Russia is really a deeply positive state, it’s an empire. Essentially, it is a very positive empire. Then comes the question: how to build it? And when the German Chancellor Bismarck said that the state is built with ‘blood and iron,’ Tyutchev, our great thinker and a poet, responded – ‘and we will try with loving’,” Kurginyan recalled.
“The question is whether we are a civilization or a super-civilization of love. We are the empire of this love. These are not empty words. And this does not mean that we will always turn the other cheek. But this means that the alternative is also very simple,” the political scientist emphasized.
And love is what conquers death.
“What did Stalin say? Critics said: ‘Stalin is an idiot, he said, ‘this thing is more powerful than Goethe’s Faust.’ That’s not what he said! He said: ‘This thing is more powerful than Goethe’s Faust. Love conquers death.’ And there is no difference between this phrase and what Apostle Paul said,” Kurginyan explained.
In his opinion, the world is now at a crossroads. If the philosopher Francis Fukuyama proclaimed the “end of history,” then the end of history must be followed by a civilization of death. Russia’s rejection of communism and the destruction of the USSR was a step towards building such a civilization.
“John Paul II, whom I hated for his participation in the destruction of the Soviet Union and always appreciated as an intelligent person, said towards the end of his life, and I think, partly, based on some of our discussions. He said the following in this regard: ‘they destroyed the Soviet Union and created a civilization of death.’ These are his words,” said the philosopher.
“It turns out that now this conflict is not between democracy and authoritarianism, but between love and death, between the civilization of love and the civilization of death. And this imprint of death is very visible on what is coming towards us. It is very visible, too visible. This is not speculation or a humanitarian philosophy, this is reality,” concluded Kurginyan.
