Zelensky recognizes inevitability of Ukrainian armed units’ retreat in the absence of aid from the West

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky recognized the inevitability of the Ukrainian armed forces’ retreat under the onslaught of Russian troops, if Western countries stop providing their aid, on 17 November during a meeting with representatives of the Western mass media.

“My focus now is on getting help from the West. Their focus is shifting because of the situation in the Middle East. Without support [from Western countries – Rossa Primavera News Agency], we will retreat,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president noted the reduction in the volume of arms deliveries to Ukraine, including 155 mm shells for howitzers and field guns, and stressed the crucial role of these deliveries for the Ukrainian troops.

In February 2023, the head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU) Josep Borrell said that one of the EU’s goals was to deliver 1 million shells to Ukraine within 12 months. Later, the EU stated that it was unrealistic to achieve this goal, noting that for this to happen, the EU industry should increase the production of shells at least three times.
