Kurginyan: The West in the 20th century destroyed the ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity

The West destroyed the bourgeois foundations for the existence of the Western world defined by the ideals of the Great French Revolution – freedom, equality, fraternity during World War I, political scientist, philosopher, and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on October 17 in an edition of his author’s program Destiny.

According to the political scientist, after the period of religious ideals and the associated monarchy, the existence of the Western world on so-called bourgeois foundations was defined by the ideals of the Great French Revolution – liberty, equality, fraternity.

The transition to Protestantism called into doubt the legitimacy of the monarchy as the authority of anointed sovereign, Sergey Kurginyan noted.

“This was the transition from all this to the concept of the nation state, united by territory, population, culture, governance, law, rationality, consensus of groups and what is called reverence for ‘sacred stones of France’ or some other country,” the philosopher explained.

Kurginyan specified that the ideological complex of “freedom, equality, fraternity” gave vitality to the entire Western “reasonable” economy. “These ‘freedom, equality, fraternity’ plus the utopia of peaceful-rational life: ‘We have brought the kingdom of reason into the world’ (‘Freedom, equality, fraternity’ also plus the kingdom of reason). ‘We have brought the kingdom of reason into the world. And the kingdom of reason means that we dream and will realize the dream of a peaceful rational life’. “

World War I, with its insanity and the fields of Europe sown with the bones of millions of young men, disrupted this order, the political scientist believes. As a result, it became “absolutely unclear to the population of the West what were the ideals one had to die for.”

“It is quite clear that all these ideals of ‘freedom, equality, fraternity’ plus the ‘kingdom of reason’ failed. The Romantics were already skeptical of these ideals saying, ‘Here, they promised freedom, equality, fraternity, but everything is so bourgeois, ferocious – a jungle, a war of all against all’. This was said by conservative romantics who said we should go back to the Middle Ages, by revolutionary romantics who were already thinking about communism and everything else. But this was just the cry of the counter-elite groups,” Essence of Time’s leader said.

He emphasized that there is a connection between the West’s withdrawal from the “kingdom of reason” and what is happening now in Israel.

On October 17, Russia proposed that the UN Security Council call for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and the creation of conditions for the evacuation of civilians. The resolution, despite China’s support, did not get the necessary number of votes in favor.
