Azerbaijani president: Nakhichevan railroad will pass through Iran

Tehran and Baku have reached an agreement on laying the Nakhichevan railroad line through Iran. President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced this on October 11, IRNA informed.

The Azerbaijani president made this statement at the 27th meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Aliyev noted that his country is working to develop the potential of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

The commercial corridor is implemented on the basis of an agreement on establishing a route between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic through the territory of Iran.

Deputy for Economic Diplomacy of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Mehdi Safari held talks with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ceyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijani state news agency Azertaj informs. At the meeting, the sides discussed the implementation of the International North-South Transport Corridor and road connection between Zangezur Economic Region and Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.

On October 6, Iranian Transport Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash met with President Aliyev in Baku. They discussed the idea of a new road project that would pass through Iran and connect Azerbaijan with its enclave of Nakhichevan.
