Students in German Fürstenwalde protest against refugees in their gymnasium

17.07.2023, Fürstenwald.

About 150 high school students in the German town of Fürstenwalde (Brandenburg) demonstrated against plans to use their school gymnasium to house refugees, radio station Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb24) reported on July 10.

The students demanded that the gym be returned to them. According to the district administration, the gym will soon be used as temporary housing for 100 refugees from Ukraine.

The demonstrators marched with placards through the city center. “We demand that our position be heard and that what is important to us, namely our physical education, can be ensured,” a representative of the protesting students Skadi Jerominek said.

It is noted that the district administration had earlier cited the strained situation of accommodating refugees. Capacity limits have long been exceeded. The hall is an emergency solution, said social services director Angelica Zarling.

Zarling said the school gym is scheduled to house refugees through the end of December.
