Russian hockey player detained in Poland on charges of espionage

Polish law enforcement agencies detained a Russian hockey player under the pretext of espionage, Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro wrote on his page on social networks on June 30.

“Another success of the investigators of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the National Security Agency. A spy was caught acting under the guise of an athlete,” Ziobro’s message reads.

According to Ziobro, the athlete was gathering information about “critical infrastructure in several provinces.”

The player is not named but is known to be 20 years old and has been in Poland since October 2021.

According to Ziobro, the athlete plays for a hockey club of the first league.
