Zelensky says that Kiev has the right to participate in settlement of Transnistrian issue

01.06.2023, Kishinyov.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy said that Ukraine could play a key role in the settlement of the Transnistrian issue if Moldova asked for help in “demilitarization of the territories” where Russian peacekeepers are deployed, he said during the summit of the European political community in Moldova on June 1 .

During a press conference on the summit’s sidelines, a journalist asked the president whether Ukraine planned to initiate a review of the “5+2” project, which was proposed to resolve the Transnistrian conflict. The project includes Kishinyov and Tiraspol as parties to the conflict and Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE as mediators, with the European Union and the United States as observers.

Zelenskiy noted that he sees no point in discussing a “dead” “5+2” project and emphasized the need to speak from the position of a strong state that has defended its land. He also noted Ukraine shares the position of Moldova, based on the principle of unity.

He expressed uncertainty about the need for help from other partners, including Romania, and emphasized that Ukraine would play an important role in resolving the Transnistrian issue, given the common border.
