Romanian president makes it clear that his country will not fight for Moldova

01.06.2023, Kishinyov.

If Moldova joins the conflict in Ukraine, Romania will not provide military assistance to Kishinyov, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said at a press conference in Kishinyov on June 1.

The Romanian president was asked whether Bucharest could provide a “security umbrella” for Moldova if the conflict in Ukraine escalates. The Romanian president replied that he did not understand what was meant by a “security umbrella.”

“Purely militarily, I don’t see how we can intervene in the event of a conflict. But we can help improve personnel from Moldova, their training. Help with subsidies, as we did by providing barracks supplies,” Johannis said.

He further stated that the issue of Romania’s protection of Moldovan airspace is highly complex, because Romania is a NATO member, while Moldova is a neutral state.

The Moldovan authorities publicly state that Russia is allegedly waging a hybrid war against the republic. The Moldovan authorities have not provided a single proof.

On 1 June Moldova hosts a summit of the European political community, where heads of state of 47 countries, European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Robert Metsola gathered together.
