Mental illness becomes an overwhelming problem in Ukraine. Opinion

Mental health disorders among the population have become a massive problem in Ukraine, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, according to reports from the war theatre of the Essence of Time newspaper.

Reports of salt crosses to counter cruise missiles have appeared in Ukrainian media publications. In the city of Khmelnitsky in western Ukraine, locals are painting marks on the streets to protect against shelling. According to local Telegram channels, the idea came from subscribers to one of the communities in Viber.

Internet users decided that orthodox crosses poured with salt on the ground would help protect the city from Russian missile attacks. In doing so, they devised special rules for the markings. Half a packet of salt must be used for each cross, and the mark can only be placed on bare ground, not on asphalt or paving stones.

A survey was conducted in the community where such a proposal came up, which found that more than 700 subscribers responded and put up salt crosses to protect the city.

The WHO estimates that 9.6 million Ukrainians may have mental health problems because of the conflict. And that, taking into account refugees, separated territories and battlefield casualties, is almost every second person!” – says the editorial in the Essence of Time newspaper.
